Our very own Phi Library was featured in the UNC exhibition Knowledge Building(s): The Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in conjunction with the 2012 Gladys Hall Coates lecture on University History.

Senator Hannah Chacon wrote, “Though the literature endowed by the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies consists of thousands of books, the books in UNC’s original libraries are slowly decaying from frequent use and the imminent passage of time. These books contain much more than just the old stories written within because they hold the secrets of the Senators’ hands through which they have passed.”

“Books preserve knowledge,” she continues, “and plaster preserves the memory of Senator Robert Burton House. He is immortalized in stone, but brought to life with the stories preserved in the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies’ Records and Journals.”
