Participate in the DiPhi Winter Service Initiative

Senators and Guests, DiPhi is initiating a service program in which we all should take part. It’s really easy and it should be fun to prove that your society loves philanthropy more than <insert opposite society name here>.
There is a set of approved service events, and for each one in which you take part, your society will receive a point. The society with the most points wins the challenge! Guests can choose which society to support.
BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE. When you participate in an event, you will receive a free DiPhi patch and a free “Live Phi or Di Hard” Magnet! Both are only available by participation.
Here’s a list of the opportunities (also see our calendar):

Volunteer at Crescent Green Assisted Living of Carrboro

Bringing Desserts to a UNC HOPE Community Dinner

Thanksgiving Food Drive

Book Drive for Children with Cancer

Thanks all, and may the most PHI-lanthropic society win.
YH&OS, President Burges

Why LearnStuff knows we need a break

If you think working overtime, skipping your lunch hour and staying chained to your desk will make you more productive, you need to cut yourself some slack and take a break.

Working non-stop without taking a break can increase your chances of weight gain, heart disease and worse. Staring at a computer screen for more than 2 hours per day can cause Computer Vision Syndrome, a real affliction, which causes blurry vision, headaches, dry eyes and can lead to long-term nearsightedness. However, getting up and away from your desk for just 5 minutes can alleviate eye strain and reduce fatigue in addition to making you feel better. The mere act of standing at your desk instead of sitting at it can help you burn up to 2500 calories per week. Not bad for just standing around.

Work hard and break hard; doing so will make you a healthier, happier and more productive employee.

2012 Retreat a Success

_
This year’s retreat for senators in beautiful Atlantic Beach, NC was another great adventure. The air not only was warm, but the water was also pleasant for October. We hope to return to the NC Aquarium, Fort Macon, Morehead City, and the NC Maritime Museum soon!

Governor Holshouser Delivers 2012 Kemp Plummer Battle Lecture

DiPhi was proud to host the 68th Governor of North Carolina, James E. Holshouser as our annual Kemp Plummer Battle Lecturer on University History. Governor Holshouser spoke on this University Day to a room of Senators, guests, and Alumni about his struggles as Governor and as a member of the NC House with the large and unique North Carolina university system. He also used his address to commemorate the contributions of the late Bill Friday to the state and University. Governor Holshouser was voted a Friend of the Joint Senate this week.

Phi’s Rout Di’s in a Historic Sports Match of Virtue versus Liberty

The basketball committee met on October 4th at 8PM in Woolen Gym to decide which society might come away with the President’s Cup for Excellence in Basketball Arts. In an epic twenty minute two-on-two basketball competition, the Phi’s proved that they still had the skill and spirit of former player David Gillespie. Players Senator Na and Senator Dreyzen were able to lead for much of the second half and eventually came away with a 22-12 win over Senators Bissell, Menachery, Robertson, and Warshauer. Player/Coach Isaac Warshauer is hopeful though for the Di’s next opportunity to snatch the President’s Cup which will come next semester. For now though, the glory of athletic victory goes to the Philanthropic Society, even though this says nothing of their skills in Literature, Speech, and History.

Phi Library Featured in Campus Exhibition

Our very own Phi Library was featured in the UNC exhibition Knowledge Building(s): The Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in conjunction with the 2012 Gladys Hall Coates lecture on University History.

Senator Hannah Chacon wrote, “Though the literature endowed by the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies consists of thousands of books, the books in UNC’s original libraries are slowly decaying from frequent use and the imminent passage of time. These books contain much more than just the old stories written within because they hold the secrets of the Senators’ hands through which they have passed.”

“Books preserve knowledge,” she continues, “and plaster preserves the memory of Senator Robert Burton House. He is immortalized in stone, but brought to life with the stories preserved in the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies’ Records and Journals.”
